What Is Cub Scouting?

In 1930 the Boy Scouts of America launched a program for boys with an emphasis on caring, nurturing relationships between boys and their parents, adult leaders, and friends. Cub Scouts do fun things with other kids! They get to wear a cool uniform, go places, and see things. They play all kinds of sports and build things, like race cars and bird houses. Want to learn a secret code? Want to learn about wild animals? If you're a boy in the first through fifth grades, then you want to be a Cub Scout!

The Purposes of Cub Scouting

  • Positively influence character development and encourage spiritual growth
  • Help boys develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship
  • Encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body
  • Improve understanding within the family
  • Strengthen boys' ability to get along with other boys and respect other people
  • Foster a sense of personal achievement by helping boys develop new interests and skills
  • Show how to be helpful and do one's best
  • Provide fun and exciting new things to do
  • Prepare boys to become Boy Scouts

Pack 978 - Oakland Presbyterian Church

Cub Scout Pack 978 was formed in 2004, and each new year has brought growth and more learning. The Cub Scouts are for boys in the first through the fifth grade. Pack 978 is part of the Central Florida Council and in the Rolling Hills District.  Our District Unit Commissioner is Mark Winsor, who happens to work at Oakland Presbyterian Church, so we are fortunate to see him often.

There are currently twenty-six scouts that attend faithfully, and are divided into four dens according to age levels. Tiger Cubs (first graders), Wolf Cub Scouts (second graders), Bear Cub Scouts (third graders), and Webelo Scouts (fourth and fifth graders) meet weekly. Meetings are held at the Oakland Presbyterian Church on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

Once a month, all of the dens and family members gather for a pack meeting under the direction of a Cubmaster and pack committee. The committee includes parents of boys in the pack and members of the chartered organization.  The pack meeting is usually designed to include a family outing or special event, such as the Raingutter Rally, Pinewood Derby, Blue and Gold Banquet, or the Feller's Cake Bake.

Pack 978 is also involved in community service, and they take pride in getting out into the community to visibly give back to those who have been so supportive of them throughout the year.
