Just as we trust in our cleansing through Baptism, we believe the consecration of our remains in Christian burial is the symbol of a whole life in the Church and in Jesus Christ.
The Memorial Garden of Oakland Presbyterian Church is designed to be our statement of the traditional ministry of the church to provide dignified Christian burial of the cremated remains of its members and their families. The church pledges to maintain the beauty of the Memorial Garden as a proclamation of our Faith in the resurrection of the dead and a place of reverence, for meditation, rest, and prayer.
Any member or former member of Oakland Presbyterian Church, their spouses, children and immediate family, is eligible for burial in the Memorial Garden. Immediate family includes the father, mother, spouse, and children. Ministers, who have served Oakland Presbyterian Church, and their immediate families, are eligible for burial in the garden.Application for interment in the Memorial Garden shall be submitted to the Memorial Garden Committee. Upon acceptance of the application, and receipt of the appropriate financial consideration for each person to be interred, the church will issue a receipt acknowledging payment and a Certification of Reservation (Contract). The application of any church member, when accompanied by the appropriate fees, will be accepted and approved for that member and/or their immediate family. No Certification of Reservation shall be transferred by a purchaser by will, intestate succession or otherwise.
The place of interment in the Garden will follow a plan adopted by the Memorial Garden Committee. Although no particular place in the Garden may be chosen or designated by the applicant, provisions will be made of the burial of spouses in adjacent spaces, if purchased simultaneously. To ensure the dignity of a Christian burial, only an ordained minister serving Oakland Presbyterian Church, or an ordained minister requested by the family and invited by the Moderator of the Session, will be authorized to officiate in the service.
The cremated remains are placed in the ground, in a standard container. Oakland Presbyterian Church will provide the container as part of the interment fee. The burial site will be covered with an inscribed marker containing the name, year of birth, and year of death of the decedent. A record of each in-ground burial is kept by the Memorial Garden Committee.Memorial markers are available for members of Oakland Presbyterian Church and their immediate family members who have been interred elsewhere.
All funeral expenses and the costs of cremation are the responsibility of the family of the deceased. Other charges by the church will be set by the Memorial Garden Committee and approved by the Oakland Presbyterian Church Session.
